Sturgeon Valley Area Structure Plan

Armin A. Preiksaitis & Associates Ltd. led an interdisciplinary consulting team which included Salloum and Associates Consulting Group, Associated Engineering Alberta Ltd., and Gibbs and Brown Landscape Architects Ltd. in preparing an area structure plan to balance the demand for growth of country residential development on Edmonton's northern fringe and maintaining rural values and local wishes to protect the natural and scenic qualities of the Sturgeon Valley.

Reporting to a Steering Committee with representatives from the cities of Edmonton and St. Albert, the Area Structure Plan was successfully prepared and approved within ten (10) months.

This statement was developed early in the planning process and formed the basis of the Plan: Despite mounting pressure for urbanization of the area, our collective vision is to preserve, protect, and enhance to the greatest extent possible the irreplaceable attributes of the rural and natural landscape for present and future generations. Future development needs to be directed and managed in a way that maintains the predominantly rural character of the area and protects the natural environment.

Community Consultation was an important part of the planning process. Effective methods used to involve residents, property owners, and other interested parties included a public information program, interviews and focus groups, community consensus work-shops, and posting information related to the project on Sturgeon County's website.
